For Immediate Release
CULPEPPER, VA - What do you get if you combine a passion for horses with a an equal passion for the fight against breast cancer?
The answer is the Central Virginia Race for the Cure.
This two hour trail ride was recently held in Locust Hill Perserve in Virginia,
and once again MagView Project Manager Amy Posey and her fellow riders helped make the event a tremendous success.
The Central Virginia Race for the Cure® was started in 1998 by Jennifer Norvell Saunders, in memory of her mother, Joanne. Joanne lost her battle with breast cancer after a second reoccurrence of her disease. To honor her mother's life, Jennifer, her family, and friends planned the first Central Virginia Race for the Cure® with the hope that fifty people would join them. To Jennifer's surprise over 1,200 gathered at the starting line that Mother's Day weekend.
The Komen Central Virginia Affiliate was established in 1999 to support Komen's vision of a world without breast cancer and to promote the promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures. In 2010, the Affiliate changed its name to Komen Central Virginia to better reflect its expansive region, which today encompasses approximately 70 cities and counties.
Posey and her team of ten barn mates and horses (and a supporting crew of seven) made a tremendous impact on the event.
The team raised almost $5,000 in just 30 days of fundraising.
They raised the second largest amount as a team and the largest amount per rider. "I am so proud of our team, and the support we received for the ride. The support exceeded my expectations; we started late and thought that we would raise about a thousand dollars this year and really plan to shine next year. We had to raise our goal 3 times, because we were exceeding it by so much. The team and I consider it was an honor to be a part of the Ride for the Cure 2010 and are already planning for the ride next year."
Posey and her team are already taking aim to top their numbers for next year's ride!
