Structured resulting system aids research, reduces results turn-around times at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

As a breast center that focuses on patient care and extensive research, the University of Virginia Breast Care Center in Charlottesville conducted a long and detailed search for an information system that would fit both needs equally. After evaluating the market, they selected MagView Mammography Information Systems as their partner.

"We really wanted to increase our efficiency by decreasing our report turn-around time," says Laurie Hubbard, Breast Imaging Manager. "In addition we needed to have expansive search capabilities in our database because of all the clinical research that we perform". MagView implemented a fully integrated solution for the center integrating not only with the hospital's Radiology Information System, but also providing a seamless integration with the reading stations which allowed the radiologists an easy way to pull up patients to report via worklists. "The worklists are a very effective way of reporting and monitoring reports," added Hubbard.

The breast imaging and clinical services at UVA combine to allow for patients to see multiple members of the Breast Care Team in one location where providers can easily communicate with each other. There is no other comprehensive facility in the region with this combination of services for rapid testing, accurate diagnosis and timely treatment. "We were able to reduce report turn-around time to 24 hours for most cases due to the radiologists signing the reports in real time. This allows us to get results to the patient very quickly," said Hubbard.

The Breast Care Center has an extensive imaging area that houses the latest technology. All breast images are interpreted by certified radiologists who specialize in breast imaging and utilize the most advanced mammography, ultrasound, and MRI technology. All of this technology combines with the experience of the radiologists to allow the center to track patients who fall into specific categories. "MagView was able to create specific reports for us that allow us to identify patients who meet certain research criteria," says Hubbard. "This has made case review much more efficient. The system is very easy for us to add or change items that fit our ever changing research standards."

One of the main concerns of undertaking such a vast implementation at a center as busy as UVA was the shift to a new system and a new way of performing tasks. Through several workflow visits and extensive project management, the two companies were able to have a smooth and effective go live. "One of the main concerns with a software system is the service and training. MagView has made this a priority for them." said Hubbard.
