MagView - Then and Now

For years, MagView has been the leading provider of mammography reporting, mammography tracking and mammography information systems. In business for over 20 years, the company and product did not get where they are today overnight. To be on the cutting edge of technology, we have had to change as the breast imaging environment has changed. Through every transition – MQSA, digital to analog mammography, the use of breast ultrasound, MRI, screening ultrasound, BSGI and tomosynthesis – MagView has always been ahead of the curve, providing effective and efficient solutions for our customers.
Below, we’d like to share with you a little bit about how we’ve become the leading provider of breast imaging data management solutions. It is our years of experience, coupled with our constant corporate focus on mammography, that have turned MagView into the leader in mammography information systems.

The Early Years (1990 - 1992)

Applied Software, Inc. was founded on August 28, 1990, based on the Medical Office Solution; practice management software written in the 1980’s and purchased by ASI from American Digital Systems.

The ASI Medical Office Solution was multi-specialty product serving a small regional base of customers which we continue to serve to this day.

ACR Partnership (1992 - 1995)

In 1992, as the ACR was set to publish the first version of the BI-RADS Atlas, they sought companies to bid on the development of new software that would help ACR members implement the recommendations of BI-RADS.

Competing with existing Mammography Information System vendors, ASI developed a software prototype, won the bid, and contracted with the ACR to fully develop and support the new “BIRD” software.

The ACR BIRD program

"MagView" (1994)

In 1994, a contest was held to re-name the “BIRD Program.” After much consideration, the name “MagView” was selected by Gordon Bass, the ACR CIO. The idea was that the software allowed a practice to get a “magnification view” of the performance of their practice, physicians and efforts to track patients.

To this day, most users know ASI simply as “MagView”.

Independence (1995 - 2000)

In 1995, due to a perceived conflict of interest between its commercial and non-commercial activities, the ACR sold all rights to the MagView software to ASI. At that time, ASI focused its efforts in the Breast Imaging field, and re-launched the company in support of that new focus.

In 1996, MagView made the transition from DOS to the Microsoft Windows platform.
